Orthodontics is the category of dentistry that specializes in diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental irregularities or the wrong position of teeth. Light pressure is exerted to the braces to move or rearrange the teeth in the right position; braces can be made of metal, porcelain or Sapphire, and may be finished with a classical or aesthetically pleasing design.
All Orthodontists are dentists, but only a very few, 6% of dentists are Orthodontists. An Orthodontist is an expert in diagnosis, prevention and treatments to dental and facial irregularities. These experts must have successfully completed an additional Residence program specialized in orthodontics for two or three years. This program should be recognized by the ADM (Mexican Dental Association). Trough this training, the Orthodontist will learn the necessary skills to operate dental movement (Orthodontics) and to guide facial development (facial orthopedics). Only those dentists that have successfully completed this specialized advanced training can be named orthodontists.
